Klickitat River
About
Class IV-V continuous drops at 1575 CFS average make the Klickitat one of the Northwest's most demanding whitewater runs. This Wild & Scenic river cuts 38 miles through BLM-managed canyon country, with optimal flows between 800 and 2350 CFS on gauge 14113000. The technical character remains consistent through five distinct sections: from the Yakama Reservation boundary down to Leidl Ramp, Leidl to Mineral Springs, Mineral Springs to Wheeler Creek, Wheeler Creek to Turkey Hole, and the final stretch to Lyle. Bureau of Land Management oversight means permit coordination for commercial operations, while private boaters navigate a river that offers little respite between major rapids. At higher flows within the optimal range, hydraulics become more retentive and consequences more serious. The Klickitat demands solid Class IV skills and reliable rolls — this is not water for moving up a grade.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
