Class IV-V drops above Index make the upper Skykomish expert-only water, steep and committing through the Henry M. Jackson Wilderness headwaters. The most popular run stretches from Gold Bar to Monroe, where Class III-IV rapids including Boulder Drop and Lunch Counter draw commercial outfitters like Orion Expeditions and RnR Whitewater. At 4,500 CFS average through King and Snohomish counties, the Skykomish pushes big water — optimal flows run 2,500 to 7,000 CFS on gauge 12134500. Below Monroe, the lower river eases to Class I-II flatwater toward its confluence with the Snohomish. The Gold Bar to Monroe section became Washington's most commercially paddled stretch in 2024, running parallel to the US-2 Scenic Byway through 45 miles of designated Washington Scenic River corridor.
