Tygart Valley River — Valley Falls & Releases
About
Scheduled dam releases from Tygart Lake turn 162 miles of Randolph and Barbour County water into some of the most reliable whitewater in the Mid-Atlantic. At 1650 CFS average with optimal flows between 800–3000, the Tygart Valley River delivers everything from Class I smallmouth fishing water to expert-only Class IV-V drops in the Tygart Gorge section from Valley Falls to Hammond. The Arden section from Arden to Philippi runs Class III-IV on scheduled releases, while the middle Tygart from Philippi to Grafton mellows to Class I-II and holds smallmouth bass. Cherokee and Shawnee hunting parties used these valleys before European settlement, and the Army Corps completed Tygart Dam in 1938 for flood control — creating the release schedule that now drives the whitewater season. Mountain State Adventures guides trips on the technical sections. Valley Falls State Park and Tygart Lake State Park bracket the most popular runs, and USGS gauge 03056000 tracks the flows that make or break a weekend trip.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
