Kickapoo River
About
Through Vernon and Crawford counties, the Kickapoo River winds 125 miles of Class I water across the Driftless Area's unglaciated valleys. At 520 CFS average flow with an optimal range of 200–1,200, the river maintains good paddling conditions through most seasons. The Kickapoo Valley Reserve protects significant stretches of the corridor, preserving the characteristic limestone bluffs and spring-fed tributaries that define this landscape carved by water rather than ice. USGS gauge 05408000 tracks the flows that determine whether the river runs clear over gravel bars or muddy after storm events typical of southwestern Wisconsin's weather patterns.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
