North Platte River — Northgate Canyon
About
Wyoming Game & Fish Blue-Ribbon waters run 70 miles from Saratoga to Seminoe Reservoir, shifting character from meadow stream to technical canyon drops. The North Platte's Northgate Canyon section averages 1,400 CFS with optimal flows between 600–3,000 CFS on gauge 06620000. From Saratoga to Pick Bridge, 20 miles of Class I water winds through classic high-country meadows — prime trout habitat with deep pools and undercut banks. The river changes completely at Pick Bridge, where 25 miles of Class II–III drops cut through remote Northgate Canyon. Below the canyon, the final 25 miles to Seminoe Reservoir settle into Class I–II desert canyon floating. Great Rocky Mountain Outfitters runs guided trips through the technical middle section, where canyon walls squeeze the river into pushy hydraulics and boulder gardens that demand precise boat control.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
