About

Buffalo Bill Dam releases create 80 miles of tailwater through Park County, with the Shoshone running an average 2,200 CFS through Shoshone National Forest and into the Bighorn Basin. The upper section from the dam to Cody offers the best trout fishing over Class I-II water, while downstream from Cody to Lovell the river widens into a Class I valley float. Below Lovell, the Shoshone transitions onto the plains with gentler Class I water. Optimal flows run 800-4,000 CFS on USGS gauge 06285100. Cody Wyoming Adventures guides sections through Buffalo Bill State Park. The dam's controlled releases keep flows relatively stable compared to the wild fluctuations typical of Yellowstone-area rivers, though spring snowmelt can still push the system well above optimal ranges.
