Snake River
About
Wild & Scenic designation protects 54 miles of the Snake River as it drops through Jackson Hole at an average 2,792 CFS. Optimal flows run 1,400–4,200 CFS on gauge 13013650, with the river shifting from Class I pools to Class III drops depending on the section. Jackson Lake to Pacific Creek marks the upper end, while Alpine Canyon provides the most technical water. The Southgate to Flagg Ranch section offers a different character than the more popular Pacific Creek to Deadmans Bar stretch, which continues downstream to Moose Landing. National Park Service manages the Wild & Scenic corridor, maintaining the undeveloped character that makes this one of the West's premier whitewater fisheries. At these volumes, the Snake moves substantial water through a landscape of cottonwood bottoms and steep canyon walls.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
