Wind River
About
From reservation meadows through one of Wyoming's most dramatic geological cuts, the Wind River drops 110 miles through Fremont County at an average 1400 CFS. The upper sections flow Class I-II through Wind River Indian Reservation lands, requiring permits for access. Wind River Canyon marks the river's centerpiece — a narrow gorge where the water picks up to Class II-III as it cuts through exposed geological layers. Commercial outfitters like Wind River Canyon Outfitters run this section regularly. Below the canyon, the river opens into wide valley water, mostly Class I flows toward Boysen Reservoir. Optimal flows run 500–3000 CFS, with USGS gauge 06228000 providing readings. The canyon section offers the most technical paddling, while the upper reservation waters and lower valley stretches provide gentler alternatives for less experienced boaters.
River conditions are community-verified. CFS ranges, difficulty ratings, and access points may not reflect every flow level or seasonal change. Always check current conditions, scout unfamiliar rapids, and paddle within your skill level.
